Smile Protection – How to Take Care of Your New Dentures

If you’re one of the many people who just got affordable quality dentures, you’re probably busy smiling more than you have in years. You can be sure that your dentist created the best dentures to restore your smile, so it’s important to take care of them, and get the most from your investment. Your permanent dentures will never be vulnerable to decay like your natural teeth were, but they are still subject to problems like warping and breakage if not taken care of properly.

Here are some great tips to help you build a care routine that will keep your new dentures in top shape for years to come:

  • Be sure to clean your dentures daily. Soak them in denture cleanser regularly to keep them white.
  • Use a denture brush and gentle strokes when brushing your dentures to avoid damaging any plastic or metal components. Moisten the brush to help avoid surface scratches.
  • Before reinserting your dentures, use toothpaste and a toothbrush to clean gums, tongue, and any remaining natural teeth to remove plaque and stimulate blood flow to the tissues.
  • After brushing thoroughly, rinse with mouthwash to freshen your breath.
  • Never try to make adjustments to your dentures yourself, which could harm your dentures or your mouth.

Denture Removal and Storage

You can remove your dentures for storage—unless they’re attached to implants.

  • For safety, fill your bathroom sink with water. Then, if you accidentally drop your dentures into water, they’ll be less likely to be damaged.
  • Swish warm water or mouthwash around in your mouth before removing your dentures.
  • To remove your top denture, place your thumb against your front tooth surface, gently pressing upward and outward. To remove the lower denture, pull it forward slowly while making a rocking motion.
  • Allowing your dentures to dry out can alter their shape, which can affect how they fit, so keep your dentures moist when you’re not wearing them.
  • Store your dentures in cool water or a denture-soaking solution.
  • Never put your dentures in hot water, which will cause warping.
  • Metal parts can tarnish if stored in water, so if your dentures have metal attachments, follow your dentist’s instructions for care and cleaning.
  • Be sure to visit your dentist in Englewood regularly for check-ups.
