Causes of Gum Inflammation and Disease

dca-blog_gum-disease

Inflammation of the gums and disease is often a result of poor dental hygiene. In some cases, these conditions may be caused by other diseases or genetic influences. Regardless of the cause, periodontal disease treatment is available and preventive measures are simple when followed diligently. If you are suffering from swollen, tender, red, or bleeding gums or have noticed that a tooth or teeth have loosened in the socket due to distress to the surrounding tissue, you should see you dentist as soon as possible. Gum disease can threaten your oral health, as well as your total health and should be treated as soon as possible.

Gum disease is caused by bacterial buildup and if it remains untreated, develops into an infection called gingivitis. What causes gingivitis is inflammation of the gums, and is highly treatable. The early stages of the infection cause an immune response, leading to inflammation, redness, and inflammation of the gums and tissue surrounding the teeth.

If gingivitis worsens, pockets may form around the teeth and gums, leading to swelling, soreness, loose teeth, and eventually tooth loss and damage to the bone of the mouth. Gum disease is responsible for 70 percent of tooth loss among adults and must treated quickly to optimize outcomes. Periodontal disease treatment is available, but it can be uncomfortable and expensive.

It is best to practice prevention. Twice-daily brushing, at minimum, is essential for removing food and bacteria that can contribute to tooth decay. You must be certain to not only brush often, but also thoroughly. Experts recommend dividing the mouth into quadrants and brushing each section for 30 seconds, for a total of two minutes of brushing.

You should also floss for two minutes each day, working between all teeth from the back to front of the mouth on both sides, top, and bottom. Flossing gets areas between teeth that your toothbrush can’t reach, including improving the impact of fluoride in toothpaste and mouth rinses, especially along the gum line.

A nutritious diet can also help to prevent gum disease. Choose fresh fruits and vegetables as main staples in your diet. Drink lots of water, including fluoridated tap water. Foods that are rich in sugar and starch can aid the bacteria that cause inflammation of the gums and periodontal disease.

If you have concerns about inflammation of the gums or other issues with your oral health, talk to your dentist in Englewood. You can prevent gum disease with a healthy lifestyle and diligence to your dental care routine.
